My stunning revelation is that I own a whole lot of what the kids would call "80's music". Like when I was teaching Governor's School two years ago and was playing "Shock The Monkey" over the speakers in the classroom before class started and two of my students walked in and said, "Oh, cool, '80s music." No, this is Peter freakin' Gabriel. A musical genius! It is not to be lumped in to the same category as the "Ghostbusters" theme or Madonna's "Holiday" or Eddie Murphy's "Party All The Time". But to them it's all part of the same, WPLJ-addled melange.
At any rate, I own a lot of the stuff. I'd like to say it's the best of it anyway, as I pop Asia's "Astra" into the CD drive. But really, there was quite a good bit of 80's music made, and I'm not going to apologize for liking it. It's the soundtrack of high school and college. The big drum sounds, roaring DX7s, the all-digital recordings. Narrow ties, tuxedo jackets, Docksiders, my glorious mullet. Good times, good times.
