May. 19th, 2004 @ 08:47 pm A random story
I was part of my church youth group in high school. We usually met in the basement of the rectory. I met my first girlfriend there. I had a lot of fun and good times.

The group had formed while I was there, and we didn't have a name. The priest and nun in charge suggested we come up with a name. There were lots of ideas mentioned--one of the Catholic prep school boys came up with a Latin phrase that when said quickly sounded like "feed them shit" but meant something more appropriate, but no one was really happy with it.

A phrase ran through my mind: "Defenders of the Faith". It sounded good, rolled off the tongue. Thing was, I knew I had just heard it somewhere, but I couldn't remember where. It was bothering me, that I couldn't place it, but it was a good enough name, I figured, that I mentioned it. Everyone liked it--including the religious officials--and it was agreed upon. We were advertised in the bulletin, and moved on.

It was only a few days later, when I was watching MTV that I realized where I heard the name: Defenders of the Faith was the title of what was then the most recent Judas Priest album. I was stunned. I laughed for several minutes. I thought about telling Sister Mary Frances but decided nothing good would come of it. So we were "Defenders of the Faith". I don't know if anyone else ever figured it out.

It would have been cooler if the group had been called "British Steel" or "Painkiller". But "Defenders of the Faith" is pretty good too.
