Jul. 29th, 2008 @ 05:45 pm Happy birthday, Geddy Lee!
Current Mood: happymusical
Current Music: Rush - "Red Sector A"
I just happened to notice while reading the paper this morning that it's Geddy Lee's 55th birthday today. In his honor, I have listened to nothing but Rush all day. Check out my last.fm profile to see. I put the entire collection on shuffle play, so it's a good mix of stuff, and several songs I hadn't heard in a long time ("Superconductor"? Kind of silly, but a nice groove.)

I think I shall do this for all my favorite musician birthdays. Joe Jackson is August 11th, Alex Lifeson is the 27th, and Neil Peart is September 12th. Cool.

I don't make him listen to it. Our offices are very well separated. I also promised him I'd do it for Peter Gabriel. And he should certainly do the same on Bruce Dickinson's birthday. Hell, there's something like 20 guitarists in Iron Maiden, he could do this a whole lot.

Plus Bruce Dickinson has a couple of solo albums, so he could expand it to include the musicians on those, too.

How do you see what your #XXXX song is on last.fm? Does it notify you when you hit a milestone or is there a statistics area somewhere?

I cheat. I look around after I play the xxxx+N song, and count N down the playlist as needed to find it.

It would be cool if there were a better way to do it. I haven't looked for an API that will tell you the number of a specific track played, or return the nth track played.

Oh, okay. So you periodically check out your profile page and use the number of plays as the thing that tells you you are XXXX+n? I'm at 11997 as we speak. Looks like Jonny Lang is going to be number 12,000....but this probably means I missed the boat completely on 10,000, right? There's a limit on the most recently played tracks...

Nevermind, there is a full history. And at 50 tracks a page it makes it fairly simple to go back...especially if you hack the URL to skip around more quickly.
