May. 2nd, 2009 @ 10:28 pm A real blog post. A meme, even
To combat LJ neglect, I asked [info]nemo_wistar to tag me for a meme:

The meme goes like this: Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

And here we go )

Current Music: Rush, but only because it's Geddy Lee's birthday
1) Go to http://www.whateveriswrongwithyou.com. Free song and a contest to win 5000 pounds.

2) Marillion Weekend Montreal is on sale. I bought a ticket. I am planning to go (but yes, life may have different plans. I'm hopeful it does not, however.) You should go: http://www.marillionweekend.com/canada/index.htm.

3) The new album, "Happiness Is The Road" will be shipped in October. I already bought mine. You can still get it at http://www.marillion.com.

I gotta say the new song sounds really good, and not just in the "I'm a fanboy and I like everything" sort of way.

I remembered I thought song charts were funny. I looked at a whole bunch, then made some myself.

As is frequently the case, these will be lost on many of you. )

Preorder Marillion's 15th album.

Yup, I'm the sucker. Another $60. I consider it my "Marillion tax", part of the amount I must contribute every year to continue to enjoy Marillion. Sometimes I fancy myself a wealthy Renaissance patron of the arts.

Some of you will understand the significance of this. This was Sunday, in the market square in Aylesbury, England:

Apr. 13th, 2007 @ 10:05 pm Marillion -- Somewhere Else
It's been three years since the last new Marillion album, and what I said then about them is still true now. This music gets inside me and pervades all I do. A new album is a significant life event.

Somewhere Else is just over half the length of Marbles and is stylistically very different--shorter songs, much more intimate production, simpler melodies and arrangements. Much more like some of the current bands with shorter pop songs with prog elements. Steve Hogarth's vocals are much more fragile, frequently breaking into falsetto, dripping with emotion and drama. While writing the album he broke up with his wife, and the title track of the album is a study of that, and the album's songs are themed with doubt, uncertainty, and distance. Certainly not a concept album, but a thematically related one.

I love the title track and the subsequent "Voice From the Past" , but I like the whole thing. Fundamentally I'm a ridiculous fanboy and would love anything they did, but what that means is I keep listening until I figure out how to appreciate what they're trying to do. I almost always can, and this album makes it easy.

This album actually fits in well with the new prog stuff I've been listening to. It also shouldn't scare you away if you listen to Radiohead or Coldplay or Muse or stuff like that. So give it a shot. It comes out in the US on April 24th.

Feb. 7th, 2007 @ 12:55 pm Marillion Listening Party
Marillion are coming out with a new album in April. They're having invitation-only listening parties all over Europe and in NYC for fans to hear the album and say hi to some of the band.

The NYC one is on February 24th and will have Steve Rothery (guitar) and Pete Trewavas (bass) playing a CD of the album, and maybe a few live songs, at a nightclub (I think it's a secret.)

I won an invite in the random draw. I get to bring someone along. The wife does not consider this worth a babysitter. Mind you, this will be a bunch of 30 and 40-somethings, predominately male, listening to an album in a bar, so I can't say I don't see her viewpoint, but it's the new Marillion album, dammit! I get to hear it two months before it's out!

Anyway, if you think this might be a fun way to spend a Saturday night, reply back and I'll get you on the guestlist and give you the details. I already offered it to [info]origamislayer but he's got theatre tickets that night.
