My in-laws finally ordered DSL. The install kit came yesterday. Guess who installed it for them?

Good thing I was here too--I got it hooked up, but something wasn't quite right. I was getting a lot of pauses and it wasn't much faster than dialup. I diagnosed the problem as a faulty extension run from the termination block, and re-ran the phone wire, thus turninng broken 1Mbps into working 5Mbps.

I got the wireless working so I can actually use the Internet now.

i can only dream that one day, i too will be that guy. that guy who can diagnose a faulty extension run from the termination block, and then re-run the phone wire. i dream about that day. you are amazing, sir.

Doesn't every technical person get stuck doing the same thing for their extended family? I had to do the same thing for my grandfather on Black Friday. I had a slight speed problem that was resolved with a firmware update for the Linksys WRT54G router, but I was unable to test the wireless connection (as I had opted to upgrade my Linux laptop to SuSE 10).

Of course, no one is as cool as you to diagnose a faulty extenion run. I bow before your mad wiring skillz.
