Did Andy Kaufman fake his death, or what?

I'm fascinated by this. I don't know why. I think because it almost seems believable, because he was so fundamentally absurd.

Discuss.

Yeah, I saw this a couple of weeks ago and spent a glorious evening wasting time reading *everything*. Believe it or not, Andy Kaufman was the chosen mascot for the young adult group at my church my freshman year in college. mainly because he said he would return. just like jesus.

oh yeah.

I've thought about this, and I'm curious to see how it plays out. Judging from the blog, whoever is writing this clearly isn't doing a very good job convincing anyone he's Andy Kaufman. But that's just it. If he were still alive, he wouldn't re-emerge in a great fanfare. He'd try to come back in the most obscure, anticlimactic, and unconvincing way possible. Personally, I don't think Andy Kaufman is still alive. Occam's Razor and all that. But it's still remotely possible that if he *is* alive, he'd try to make his comeback look completely fake. So far, it's working. This does, in fact, look completely fake. It's worth keeping an eye on, but I'd be surprised if this turned out to really be Andy.

amusingly, snopes was on the prowl days ago, with arguments that would make a New Testament scholar proud.

But the implausibility of it is exactly how Andy would be! He worked as a busboy in a restaurant at the height of his fame!

Honestly, I don't believe the blog is real, and I really don't believe he's alive. I guess it's just that it'd be so cool if he was back and performing again.

yeah, i guess my tone didn't come through right. snopes is too serious for my taste sometimes. they need to lighten up. my favorite part of their write-up...

And all of this screams of being a very un-Kaufman-like publicity stunt.

The "celebrity-died-young actually faked his own death to drop out of the public eye" rumor has long since been milked for all its worth. Every decade sees it applied to at least one prominent entertainer — James Dean, Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley, Tupac Shakur. They're all dead, and they're not coming back. Ever. That someone issued a press release proclaiming Andy Kaufman to be alive signifies nothing other than an attempt to capitalize on the confusion his bizarre performance style sowed during his lifetime. (Heck, if anybody was capable of faking his own death, it was that crazy old Andy Kaufman, right?) The releasing agency, PRWeb, is a free wire service that will distribute anyone's press release, about anything, free of charge. (Another recent PRWeb release — "Ambassador From Mars Receives 181,634 Spam Emails; Says 'Earthlings Are Not Ready' and Takes First Available Saucer Back Home" — demonstrates that nothing is considered too silly to be distributed on their wire service.)

ok, so it's a long part. but that first sentence is completely ruled out by the next paragraph. OF COURSE andy would come back by releasing a statement through the same people who put out a press release about an ambassador from mars. if this was real, he'd be the one behind BOTH statements, for crying out loud.

I still like the theory being tossed around the department of him being alive, and then getting arrested for killing a homeless person to supply the corpse.

Well, that's the thing...he set it up so there was no way to tell for sure.

But honestly, looking at the blog, I don't think the person's doing a very good job. They might be deliberately making it look improbable with the knowledge that it would convince some of Andy's diehard fans, but I think it's more likely that it's just a pet project that he hasn't put too much time or thought into. And the thing is, the biggest pranks Andy did, he put lots of thought into and executed them so well that people couldn't imagine they were fake...

I'm facinated by it too. Maybe because I really want to see him return.
